Emile Cairess pulls out of London Marathon with calf injury

Emile Cairess has withdrawn from the 2026 London Marathon after a lingering calf problem forced him off the start line. The 28‑year‑old, who placed third in 2024 and fourth at the Paris Olympic marathon, was poised to chase Sir Mo Farah's British record. His absence removes a key contender just days before the 26 April race.

Cairess first missed the 2025 edition when an ankle‑tendon issue sidelined him, and the calf strain resurfaced during this year's training block. “I am gutted to withdraw,” he said, adding that he would only race if he could perform at his best. On the women's side, world champion Peres Jepchirchir also pulled out after a stress fracture.

With a personal best of 2:06:46, Cairess had been confident his form could eclipse Farah’s 2:05:11 mark, a goal that now slips to next year. His withdrawal reshapes the elite field, giving other British hopefuls a clearer path to the podium. The marathon will go ahead as scheduled, and fans will watch to see who steps into the void.

Organisers hope the absence of two high‑profile athletes won’t dampen the event’s prestige; the race still promises fast times on a cool London course. Sponsors and broadcasters remain confident attendance will stay strong, while British athletics officials will likely turn to upcoming talent to keep the national record chase alive.
