The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has released new guidelines advising broadcasters on respectful camera angles for live female athletics events. Developed with input from female athletes, the guidelines aim to avoid sexualizing coverage through unnecessary angles.

British Olympic Bronze medalist Holly Bradshaw, a pole vaulter, advised the EBU and described receiving social media abuse and seeing inappropriate videos of herself online due to revealing camera angles. "How our sport is displayed during live broadcast can be incredibly powerful, yet sometimes harmful," she said. Athletes often focus on cameras instead of performance, with zoomed-in, super slow-motion replays capturing them in undignified positions.

Serbian Olympic long jumper Ivana Spanovic also advised the EBU, noting certain cameras cause discomfort and "serious long-term effects on athlete's mental health." The EBU produced a 'do's and don'ts' list, including avoiding low angles underneath athletes in high jump or pole vault. Glen Killane, executive director of EBU Sport, said sexualization through selective angles and editing remains a significant concern.

The BBC is an EBU partner reaching over a billion people across 57 countries. The guidance could be implemented at the European Athletics Championships starting 10 August in Birmingham, though the Diamond League, also broadcast on BBC, does not go through the EBU.
