David Howard’s Open Journey

David Howard, a 27‑year‑old mechanic from County Cork, has qualified for The Open after finishing joint second at the final qualifying event at Dundonald Links. His journey is remarkable, having battled cystic fibrosis since age seven and once feared he would not reach this age.

He describes how new medication in 2018 and a tough COVID‑19 period, including a psychosis episode, tested his resilience. Despite taking 25-30 tablets daily, he recovered, finished his apprenticeship, and returned to golf.

The 2025 East of Ireland champion, Howard only started serious golf in his late teens. With his father John on the bag, he carded rounds of 69 and 71 to secure his ticket to Royal Birkdale. He has never attended the Open before, even as a spectator.

Now he hopes his debut inspires others with cystic fibrosis. He says, “I’m here to show that it’s not the end of the world.” His appearance alongside players like Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry marks a surreal milestone.
