Dakota Ditcheva returns to PFL action Friday against Denise Kielholtz in New York after a year sidelined by two serious hand injuries. The unbeaten British-Bulgarian (15-0) broke her left hand against Sumiko Inaba in July 2024, then suffered a right-hand injury delaying a February return. The 2024 PFL flyweight champion and $1m winner says the layoff reshaped her perspective on fighting and life after MMA.

"These moments... give you an insight into what life is going to be like when you stop fighting," Ditcheva told BBC Sport. Her mother, former world champion Lisa Howarth, instilled the importance of building a post-fight career early. In January 2025, Ditcheva, 28, co-founded a premium mineral water brand, noting fighters lack pensions. She also empathized with Dustin Poirier's recent struggles, recognizing the void left when training camps end.

Despite dominating PFL with 10 wins (seven first-round finishes), Ditcheva questions a UFC move. With five fights left on her contract and her manager claiming her deal rivals top UFC pay, she says: "The UFC is not going to define me." The recent PFL-MVP merger opens boxing and super-fight avenues. "If I end my career undefeated... I'm still the number one flyweight whether I go to the UFC or not."
