The Commonwealth Games officially commenced in Glasgow with an opening ceremony that featured a surprise appearance by King Charles III, who emerged from a replica Tardis. The event celebrated the city and the Commonwealth, showcasing local talent and traditions.

The ceremony included performances by Scottish artists like Nathan Evans and KT Tunstall, alongside a rendition of "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" by Callum Beattie, which has become an unofficial Scottish anthem. A large representation of the Loch Ness Monster also made an appearance. The King's Baton Relay culminated with the King officially opening the Games, emphasizing the importance of environmental protection.

Glasgow stepped in to host the Games after Victoria, Australia, withdrew in 2023. This year’s event is more intimate than the 2014 Games, held indoors with approximately 10,000 spectators. Despite a reduced sports program and repurposed venues, organizers highlighted the city's dedication to making the Games happen. The sporting events will span 10 days, with the first medals awarded in Para-powerlifting on Friday, concluding on Sunday, August 2nd.
