Casement Park Redevelopment Set to Restart

Ulster GAA has confirmed that construction will resume at Casement Park by the end of January, with a contractor taking possession of the site to begin enabling works. This follows a period of inactivity since early 2024, with the next phase involving site preparation and demolition of existing structures, including the main stand. The social club will also relocate temporarily.

The project has faced a long, troubled history. Initial plans for a 38,000-seat stadium were approved in 2013 but quashed by judicial review. A redesigned 34,500-capacity plan was approved in 2021, but planning permission expires in July. Funding remains a major hurdle; £170.5m is pledged, but costs have soared to an estimated £260m. The stadium was withdrawn as a 2028 Euros host after UK government funding fell short.

With a phased delivery now accepted, the immediate goal is to make tangible progress before the July deadline. The Northern Ireland Executive has proposed an additional £46m to cover inflation, but that budget awaits approval. For local communities and GAA members, this restart marks a crucial, albeit slow, step towards delivering a provincial stadium promised for over a decade.
