The Irish FA has formally lodged a full planning application with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council for a new National Football Centre in Galgorm, near Ballymena. The 50‑acre site outside Cullybackey will host world‑class pitches and state‑of‑the‑art training facilities, aiming for a 2028 opening that will serve both elite squads and grassroots clubs daily.

Earlier stages saw the project launch last year, a Proposal of Application Notice to the Council and community consultation. Now the IFA stresses the centre will become the “beating heart” of Northern Ireland’s football community, offering elite training for internationals and a community pitch to meet local demand for teams ranging from youth to senior.

Technical director Aaron Hughes says the facility will give national squads a home base, raising standards and showcasing identity. He added that the centre will let young players literally follow in the footsteps of heroes, aspiring to don the green shirt while benefiting clubs, charities and the Irish FA Foundation across the entire footballing landscape.

With the application submitted, the council will now review plans, environmental impact and community feedback. Approval will unlock construction, potentially transforming Northern Ireland’s football infrastructure. The project could position the region alongside other UEFA nations that already host dedicated national centres, ensuring local talent has access to top‑tier resources for development at every age group today.
