Cardiff City must lock down key contracts before summer signings

After clinching promotion with a win at Reading, Cardiff City face a summer of contract decisions before any new signings. Defenders Perry Ng and Joel Bagan, plus midfielder Ryan Wintle, have been among the season’s most consistent, each nominated for player of the season, and will leave for free if they don’t renew. Keeping those core contributors is now firmly a top priority.

Loan players dominate the agenda. Goalkeeper Nathan Trott, adored after his Copenhagen stint, and Chelsea forward Omari Kellyman, who contributed nine goals and two assists, are likely to stay on loan. Owner Vincent Tan will fund new signings if Barry‑Murphy makes a strong case. Cardiff’s sole significant purchase last summer was a £1m fee for centre‑back Gabriel Osho.

Barry‑Murphy’s faith in academy graduates has paid dividends. Centre‑back Dylan Lawlor, now a Wales international, signed a three‑year extension to 2028 and attracted Bayern Munich interest, while striker Ronan Kpakio and midfielder Rubin Colwill impressed throughout the campaign. With the squad back in the Championship, the Bluebirds must add depth across midfield, wing and full‑back positions to remain competitive.
