Former gymnast Beth Tweddle joins Sir Brendan Foster, Steve Cram and Allison Curbishley among the signatories supporting what they call a "Great North" Games for 2040. They believe the bid would unite the country and showcase Britain's best qualities on the global stage.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness welcomed the athlete endorsement, calling it "hugely significant" given these competitors' firsthand experience of sport's transformative power. The support follows February's push from northern political leaders who presented a "compelling" case for the region.

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan opposes the plan, arguing it would exclude the capital and represent "a missed opportunity." The split between regional leaders highlights the political challenges facing any UK Olympic bid, with infrastructure and legacy questions still unresolved.
