BBC exposes misleading AI fitness ads promising impossible results

BBC Sport’s investigation uncovered a wave of AI‑generated adverts that promise rapid body transformations – “lose 40 lb in one month” or “look 20 years younger” – despite scientific consensus that such changes are impossible. The ads feature computer‑created instructors claiming personal success with the programmes, then flood users’ feeds with similar hype to unsuspecting consumers worldwide.

Prof Andy Miah of the University of Salford describes the trend as a “huge” pull for quick fixes, noting that the Advertising Standards Authority has logged roughly 300 complaints about AI‑driven fitness ads in the past year. Regulators stress that the technology itself isn’t banned; the rulebook only bars misleading or harmful messages, a line blurred by automated content and raise concerns among policymakers.

Veteran trainer David Fairlamb, 54, dismissed the claims as “wrong” and “dangerous” for youngsters, warning that 28‑day makeover promises ignore injury risk and realistic progress. The ASA issued advice notices to the offending firms, urging compliance with advertising codes rather than imposing penalties, as the BBC chose to keep the advertisers anonymous. Misleading AI fitness hype therefore remains unchecked and erodes trust in digital health.
