Badminton Scoring System Overhaul

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has voted to implement a new scoring system that will transform the sport from January 4, 2027. Matches will shift from the current best-of-three games format where players compete to 21 points, to a streamlined version where each game ends at first to 15 points. This marks the most significant rule change in badminton's recent history.

The BWF leadership believes the shorter format will create tighter games with more excitement while reducing player fatigue and injury risks. The decision followed extensive testing and consultation across five different scoring systems. Some stakeholders expressed concerns, but President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul emphasized the change maintains badminton's fundamental nature.

"We are building a sport that speaks to the next generation while continuing to invest in our players' long-term future," Leeswadtrakul stated. Despite traditionalist concerns, the BWF stands by the January 4, 2027 implementation date, viewing the 3x15 system as essential for modernizing badminton without compromising its core appeal or competitive integrity.
