Afghan Women’s Team Poised for International Return After FIFA Rule Shift

FIFA’s new rule change lifts a long‑standing ban, allowing Afghanistan’s women’s squad to compete internationally once more. Former captain Khalida Popal praised the move, calling the team a "symbol of resilience". The decision follows the launch of Afghan Women United, a refugee side that began play in May 2025.

The pilot team has already played three matches in 2025, securing a first victory over Libya in November. A training camp in New Zealand is scheduled for June, with regional selection camps underway in England and Australia. More than 80 Afghan female players now reside across Australia, Europe, the U.S. and the Middle East.

While Afghanistan cannot qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, the new status opens doors to Olympic qualifiers in 2028. FIFA president Gianni Infantino highlighted the initiative as a step toward enabling teams that lack official national representation.

The move offers displaced players a platform to showcase talent and send a message of hope back home, reinforcing the sport’s role as a vehicle for empowerment and international solidarity.
