For the first time in the Women's Super League era, three promoted sides have joined for the 2026-27 season. Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic arrive from WSL 2 as the top flight expands from 12 to 14 teams. All three begin their campaign on Sunday, with the season opening Friday as London City Lionesses host Manchester United.

Birmingham City are the champions, returning after four seasons away. They edged Palace and Charlton on goal difference, winning at The Valley on the final day. Striker Lily Crosthwaite was WSL 2 player of the year. New signings include experienced centre-back Millie Turner, who made 145 WSL appearances at Manchester United and is the new captain. "We're going to be ready," said Neve Herron.

Crystal Palace are the most familiar, back after just one season. They were difficult to beat, with four defeats the joint-fewest. Attackers Kirsty Howat and Abbie Larkin scored eight league goals each, and former Lioness Bethany England adds firepower. "We're feeling in a privileged position," said head coach Jo Potter.

Charlton Athletic are the underdogs, returning after 18 years. They reached the WSL via a play-off win over Leicester City on penalties. Goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse saved four penalties. "We're here to compete," she said. Spanish playmaker Paula Partido joins on loan from London City Lionesses.
