Wrexham are closing in on signing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. The 24-year-old is a product of the Sunderland academy and made his senior debut in a 2-1 EFL Trophy loss to Fleetwood Town in 2020-21. After a loan spell at Notts County, he helped the Black Cats gain promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs.

In 2024-25, Patterson featured 45 times as Sunderland beat Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley to reach the Premier League. However, he made just one appearance for the top-flight side before joining Millwall on loan in January, where he played 16 times. Overall, he has made 169 competitive appearances for the Black Cats.

Patterson featured as a substitute in Sunderland's 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Wrexham at Philadelphia's Subaru Park on 2 August. The Red Dragons have already added full-back Danny Imray and midfielder Ben Whiteman this summer, but manager Phil Parkinson insists more work is needed.

Speaking after a 1-0 Carabao Cup loss to Middlesbrough, Parkinson said: "We feel we're not where we need to be yet... We're working tirelessly to bring those extra players in to give everybody a boost" ahead of what he describes as an "incredibly competitive division."
