World Cup Train Fares Spark Outrage Among Fans

Football fans are outraged after NJ Transit announced $150 (£111) train tickets for 30-minute journeys to MetLife Stadium during the World Cup, representing an 11-fold increase from normal fares. The journey from Manhattan to the New Jersey venue, about 18 miles, will cost $150 for all passengers regardless of age, with shuttle bus tickets priced at $80 (£59).

Travel costs have become a major concern for fans attending matches in the United States. Similar price hikes have been announced for Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, where train fares are $80 (£59) and coach tickets cost $95 (£70). Thomas Concannon of the Football Supporters' Association called the prices "astronomical" and said fans "couldn't feel less welcome" at the tournament.

Unlike previous World Cups in Russia and Qatar where travel was free, US host cities are charging premium rates. While some cities like Philadelphia are maintaining regular fares at $2.90 (£2), others are implementing steep increases. With England and Scotland fans affected by multiple high-priced routes, supporters are organizing independent transportation solutions. The price gouging extends beyond travel, with parking at MetLife Stadium costing $225 (£166), adding to concerns about overall tournament expenses.
