Watford Names Edward Still Head Coach in Surprise Move

Championship club Watford has appointed Edward Still as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 35-year-old Belgian takes over from Javi Gracia, who resigned after just three months at Vicarage Road. Still, the older brother of former Southampton manager Will Still, brings extensive experience from the Belgian Pro League.

Still's appointment marks Watford's third head coach change this season, following Paulo Pezzolano and Gracia's brief return. The club sits 11th in the Championship table, just three points outside the play-off positions. Watford chairman Scott Duxbury expressed confidence in Still's "modern and progressive coaching methods" and his ability to connect with the club's young squad.

The Belgian coach has managed Charleroi, KAS Eupen, and KV Kortrijk, and previously worked as assistant to his brother at French club Lens. Still's first task will be to win over skeptical Watford supporters who view his appointment as a "left-field" choice given his lack of British or Championship experience.

Still becomes Watford's 14th head coach since September 2019, highlighting the club's recent managerial instability. His immediate focus will be Saturday's match against Preston North End as he aims to get the Hornets back on track and challenge for the play-offs.

Quick Fact: Edward Still was previously assistant manager at Belgian club Anderlecht.
