UEFA Won't Red Card Covered Mouths in Champions League

UEFA confirmed Thursday that players covering their mouths in confrontations will not automatically receive red cards in its club competitions. This decision applies to the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, diverging from a potential global law change. The move follows controversy surrounding Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni.

Prestianni received a six-match ban, three suspended, for homophobic conduct after an incident involving Vinicius Jr. The controversial law, championed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, was approved by Ifab in April. It aimed to deter concealed communication, but UEFA opted against its strict application.

Instead, UEFA instructs referees to assess such situations individually, considering yellow cards for unsporting behavior. The governing body will still investigate any subsequent disciplinary matters. This approach contrasts with the automatic red card review previously seen in other competitions following VAR.

UEFA will, however, continue to use VAR for incorrect corner decisions, having already reversed 22 calls. Players protesting referee decisions by leaving the field will also not face automatic dismissals.
