Gianni Infantino met with Donald Trump on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming World Cup 2026. The U.S. president reiterated that Iran is welcome to compete, despite recent hostilities. The conversation took place on Instagram, with Infantino noting the current situation in Iran and the tournament’s start on 11 June.

Since U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran earlier this month, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the team’s participation has been uncertain. Iran retaliated with missiles and drones aimed at Israel and Gulf Arab states hosting U.S. bases, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Infantino said the U.S. president’s support underscores football’s role in uniting nations amid conflict. He added that the World Cup, hosted jointly by the U.S., Canada and Mexico, will feature Iran in three matches in the United States. The decision signals a commitment to keeping the tournament inclusive despite geopolitical tensions.

With the tournament set to begin on 11 June, the inclusion of Iran could influence group standings and fan engagement across the host countries. The move also highlights FIFA’s insistence on neutrality, ensuring that sporting events remain separate from political disputes. The World Cup’s integrity now rests on the successful participation of all qualified teams.
