Tommy Smith is embracing what he calls the "crowning glory of his career" as New Zealand prepares for their second World Cup appearance. The 36-year-old Braintree Town defender has been selected in the All Whites' 26-man squad by head coach Darren Bazeley and has acclimatised after the team flew to Florida. Born in Macclesfield but raised in New Zealand, Smith brings international experience from the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Having played every minute in the 2010 World Cup in Group F, where New Zealand drew with Italy and finished third despite not advancing, Smith understands the challenge ahead. The team faces Belgium, Egypt and Iran in the group stage, with their first match against Iran on June 16 in Los Angeles
