New Zealand coach has selected defender Tommy Smith in the 26-man World Cup squad, despite his club Braintree Town suffering relegation from the National League this season. Smith joins an experienced core as the All Whites prepare for their third World Cup appearance. Chris Wood returns from injury to captain the side, having made his comeback in April following knee surgery.

New Zealand's World Cup pedigree includes memorable performances at the 2010 tournament, where they drew with Italy, Slovakia and Paraguay but failed to advance beyond the group stage. Their best previous showing came in 1982 at their debut World Cup. The 2026 edition marks a historic occasion, with the US, Canada and Mexico serving as joint hosts from June 11 to July 19.

The All Whites face a challenging group containing Belgium, Egypt and Iran. Before the tournament, New Zealand will contest friendlies against Haiti and then England in Tampa, Florida on June 6. Wood's leadership will be crucial as New Zealand aims to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
