James Tavernier has confirmed he will depart Rangers at season’s end after an 11‑year spell at Ibrox. The 34‑year‑old right‑back, who has captained the side since 2018, posted the decision on Instagram, saying leaving “hasn't been an easy choice” despite the club’s central role in his life.

Under his leadership Rangers lifted the Scottish Premiership in 2021, added the Scottish Cup in 2022 and secured the League Cup in 2023. Tavernier also captained the team to the 2022 Europa League final, where they fell to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties.

Throughout his Rangers career, Tavernier netted 144 goals in 562 appearances, a record for a defender. His tally of 152 goals across all competitions makes him the club’s highest‑scoring full‑back ever.

In a heartfelt post, Tavernier thanked Rangers for the opportunities and vowed to give his all until his contract ends. The announcement leaves the club and its supporters with a legacy of leadership and goal‑scoring prowess that will be hard to replace.

Tavernier’s exit marks the end of an era for Rangers’ defensive core, as the club looks to rebuild around younger talents. His departure will trigger a search for a new captain and a replacement who can match his defensive solidity and offensive contribution.
