Starmer urges TNT to make Arsenal Champions League final free-to-air

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged TNT Sports to make next Saturday's Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris St-Germain free-to-air. In a letter to the broadcaster, Starmer said he was "saddened" that for the first time since the competition began 34 years ago, fans would need a subscription to watch the match.

The game will be available through HBO Max at £4.99 for a monthly subscription, after BT Sport was bought by Warner Bros Discovery and rebranded as TNT Sports. Every previous final since the European Cup became the Champions League in 1992 has been broadcast free in the UK, traditionally on ITV and later BT Sport's YouTube channel.

Starmer, an Arsenal fan, wrote: "Hard-working people should not have to worry about forking out for a subscription to watch a game of this magnitude." TNT Sports said the £4.99 price represents "exceptional value" and that all three UEFA finals are available to subscribers. From 2027-28, TNT loses its European rights to Paramount+ and Sky Sports.
