Spygate Hearing Threatens EFL Play-Off Final Schedule

The upcoming Championship play-off final at Wembley faces potential postponement due to the scheduling of a 'Spygate' disciplinary hearing involving Southampton. The English Football League (EFL) has confirmed it possesses "a number of contingency plans" should the match require rescheduling following the hearing and subsequent appeal process. The fixture, set for next Saturday, is the first of three play-off finals scheduled across the weekend, with League One and Two finals scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

The hearing is being managed by Sport Resolutions before a three-person panel. The EFL is pushing for an expedited process to protect the scheduled date, but Southampton is seeking time for an internal review. Any party deemed to have an interest, potentially including Middlesbrough, has the right to appeal the initial ruling, though the appeal decision is final as per EFL rules.

Uncertainty remains because there is no established framework for sanctions if Southampton is found guilty; options range from a fine to a points deduction or expulsion from the play-offs. Hull City’s sporting director, Jared Dublin, affirmed the club is preparing normally but acknowledged the edginess among supporters. Given that Wembley is booked solid the following weekend for the Rugby League Challenge Cup final and other events, a rescheduled fixture could face significant scheduling difficulties.
