Southgate Declines World Cup Pundit Role, Prefers Silence

Former England manager Gareth Southgate announced he will not serve as a pundit at the 2026 World Cup, citing a desire to avoid distraction for the squad. After stepping down following a loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Southgate opted to stay out of the media spotlight.

Southgate’s decision follows eight years at the helm, during which he guided England to two European Championship finals and the 2018 World Cup semi‑finals. He said that speaking to the press could mislead or pressure the team, preferring to let the players focus on preparation.

England’s campaign opens on June 21 against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, with subsequent matches against Ghana and Panama. Southgate believes the team is “ready to win” and has confidence after overcoming hurdles in prior tournaments.

The former manager’s choice underscores a broader trend of ex‑coaches distancing themselves from broadcast roles during major events, aiming to protect squad morale and avoid external commentary.
