Southend United dismissed head coach Kevin Maher and his backroom staff just 48 hours after the club lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley. The 2-1 victory marked Southend’s first ever domestic cup triumph, a milestone Maher called one of his career highlights. Players and supporters celebrated the win, unaware it would be his final match in charge.

Since the COSU consortium seized control, Maher steered the team to consecutive top‑seven finishes and guided them to two Wembley finals. He also holds the club record for appearances, playing 454 games between 1998 and 2008. In 2024 the council honoured him with the Freedom of the City for navigating the side through a severe financial crisis.

Club chairman Kevin McGreal thanked Maher, assistant Darren Ward and analyst Mark Anderson for their commitment to the community, yet said a new direction was required. Fans expressed disbelief at the timing, insisting the trophy win should have secured longer tenure. Maher departs as a legend, his legacy cemented despite the abrupt termination.

Southend will now search for a manager capable of building on the historic cup success while stabilising finances ahead of the next season. The board has opened applications, signalling a swift recruitment process.
