Shaw's record run fuels debate on WSL's greatest striker

Khadija “Bunny” Shaw capped Manchester City’s first WSL title in a decade with a brace in a 4‑1 win over West Ham, becoming the first player to net 20 or more goals in three separate campaigns. The double pushed her to 100 goal contributions – 82 goals and 18 assists – in just 93 appearances, the second‑quickest ever to reach that mark.

Shaw’s third consecutive Golden Boot arrived after a 13‑minute hat‑trick against Tottenham, taking her seasonal tally to six – more than any other WSL striker. She also set a new record with 31 headed goals, eclipsing Bethany England. Last week she collected a second Football Writers’ Association award and became the first player to win the league’s Player of the Season prize twice.

With 80 goals in her first 90 WSL games, Shaw sits six ahead of Vivianne Miedema on a per‑match basis and leads the division in goals‑per‑90 minutes (1.08). Contract talks have stalled, and Chelsea are tipped to swoop on her on a free transfer. Should she depart, City must find a replacement capable of sustaining their title challenge.
