Scotland vs Ivory Coast: Why Liverpool Hosts World Cup Prep Match

Scotland's World Cup preparation has taken an unusual turn with their friendly against Ivory Coast being played at Everton's new stadium in Liverpool. The match, part of the 'Road to 26' series leading to the 2026 World Cup, brings together two teams from different continents for a strategic warm-up. Scotland manager Steve Clarke specifically sought African opposition to prepare for their Group C clash with Morocco in June.

This logistical arrangement makes perfect sense for both sides. Ivory Coast, ranked 35th in the world and returning to the World Cup finals for the first time in 12 years, had already scheduled a match against South Korea at Stadium MK, which they won 4-0. With their squad primarily based in Europe and none playing in Ivory Coast, gathering in England for consecutive matches proved efficient. The proximity to Scotland's base at Hampden Park - just a four-hour drive - sealed the deal.

The fixture also carries historical significance for Scottish football. While playing away from home might seem unusual, Scotland has experience with neutral venues, most famously their 1977 World Cup qualifier against Wales at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium. That controversial match, decided by Don Masson's penalty and Kenny Dalglish's late goal, sent Scotland to the finals in Argentina instead of Wales.
