Rooney: Knowing When to Leave Hardest Thing for Players

Wayne Rooney believes the most difficult challenge for footballers is recognizing when they're no longer performing at their peak. The former striker spent 13 years at Manchester United after joining from Everton for £27m in 2004. Rooney made 559 appearances for the club, scoring 253 goals and winning five Premier League titles, plus the Champions League and FA Cup.

Rooney decided to leave United at 31 in 2017, returning to Everton. He explained this decision on his show, saying: "The hardest thing for a player is to understand you may be not at the level you were." When Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived, Rooney wasn't playing regularly and chose to leave immediately rather than accept reduced minutes.

Rooney compared his situation to Mohamed Salah, who will leave Liverpool after nine years at Anfield. The 33-year-old forward has been a key figure for the Reds, helping them win major trophies, but has been less effective this season. Salah is on course for his first campaign without reaching double figures for league goals, with only seven goals and six assists.

"I said this since the start of the season, age gets to us all and your legs go," Rooney added. He noted similar changes have affected Virgil van Dijk. As leaders in the dressing room, their diminished performances make it difficult for other players to establish themselves. Rooney suggested players sometimes stay at clubs too long rather than recognizing when to move on.
