Pollok United crowned Europe's top grassroots club

Glasgow’s Pollok United has been crowned Europe’s top grassroots football club for the 2025‑26 season, a UEFA accolade that recognises the club’s sweeping community work. By revamping three derelict sports sites, the amateur side turned the 21‑acre Nethercraigs complex into a hub for 550 regular players and a host of health‑focused activities. This recognition places the club alongside professional outfits in a rare honour.

After Covid forced the venue to shut, manager Andy Elliot teamed with Glasgow City Council and local partners to reopen the facilities, saving a vital southwest‑Glasgow asset. Today roughly 150 neighbouring teams share the space, pushing monthly footfall to about 10,000 users, including spectators, gym‑goers and participants in dance and athletics programmes. Such volume demonstrates how sport can anchor post‑pandemic recovery across diverse demographics.

Founded in 2011, Pollok United welcomes everyone from children to pensioners, partnering with schools, asylum‑seekers and the Scottish government’s New Scots integration scheme. The club’s multi‑sport offering—gym, dance studio, athletics track—embodies Scottish FA chief Paul McNeill’s vision that community clubs serve broader social roles, not just football. Local residents report heightened wellbeing and stronger neighbourhood ties since the centre opened. The award cements Pollok United’s status as a model for grassroots sport.
