A police officer was injured and 10 people were arrested after trouble flared during Liverpool's match against Manchester City at Anfield over the weekend. Merseyside Police said the game, which City won 3-0, took place in a fevered atmosphere.
One man was arrested on suspicion of two offences of assault against a constable after the Sunday match. The officer suffered a serious facial injury and was taken to hospital for treatment. The force said he is now recovering at home. The fan was arrested on Anfield Road at around 18:30 BST.
Among the other arrests, five people were held on suspicion of tragedy chanting, one fan was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and assault, two were arrested for affray, and one for throwing items on to the pitch. Police stressed that tragedy chanting "had no place in football".
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin described the behaviour as "disappointing" and said the tragic loss of life "should never be a subject for tribal point-scoring". She added that the overwhelming majority of the 60,000 fans in attendance behaved well, and thanked them for their co-operation. Police said they will continue working with clubs to identify perpetrators and bring them to justice.
