Michael Oliver, the 41‑year‑old English referee, will miss his first 2026 World Cup assignment after an injury ruled him out of the Ivory Coast versus Ecuador fixture in Philadelphia. Francois Letexier will step in on short notice.

Oliver has overseen Premier League action since 2010 and joined UEFA’s elite panel in 2018. He guided the 2022 World Cup quarter‑final between Croatia and Brazil and has already featured at Euro 2024.

FIFA says Oliver should return to the referee list in the coming days. His absence removes a seasoned official from a pool of 52 referees, 88 assistants and 30 video match officials spread across the US, Canada and Mexico.

The switch highlights the depth of FIFA’s officiating corps and underscores how a single injury can ripple through a tournament’s scheduling and operational plans.
