Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City for £52 million, strengthening their midfield options ahead of the 1 September deadline. Although the Magpies' young squad came close to defeating Liverpool on the opening weekend, manager Jaissle confirmed further adjustments were needed. After reluctantly selling captain Guimaraes to Arsenal, Newcastle targeted Gonzalez, who excelled in Europe's top five leagues last season.

Among midfielders with at least 900 minutes played, Gonzalez led for high turnovers per game and ranked in the Premier League's top five for line-breaking passes. These traits make him an invaluable addition as he takes on a greater role at St James' Park. Newcastle have already made six signings this summer, including goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, defender Amar Dedic, and midfielders Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur.

The club is looking to balance youth with experience following the Guimaraes departure.
