After four months in hospital, Saffron Cresswell faced a daunting return home to Worcestershire. The 25-year-old former eventer had built her life around horses, training since age five and competing at senior level. A fall at Bramham Horse Trials in June 2024 left her paralysed, bringing an abrupt end to her Olympic pathway.

Cresswell had risen through the ranks, representing Great Britain at three European championships before the accident at age 23. The accident occurred three fences from the finish during her under-25 cross-country round on Vivendi Hero. Devastated, she confessed she could not imagine returning to horses, fearing the loss of physical connection and the perfection she had chased for years. "I think it would just be very disheartening for me," she stated.

Instead, Cresswell discovered a new passion in para-canoe. Having only sat in a canoe for the first time eight months prior, she quickly qualified for the World Championships. Her journey highlights a remarkable adaptation from a career defined by early morning rides and rigorous coaching to a new athletic pursuit.
