Neville and Lineker’s rival podcast mogul empires

Gary Neville’s The Overlap network recently acquired Manchester United influencer Mark Goldbridge’s YouTube channels, cementing the former defender’s status as a major independent football media player. Neville co-founded Buzz16 a decade ago, launching the YouTube platform in 2021. It claims 2.2 billion cross-platform views in 2025, sponsored by Skybet, aiming to become the world’s biggest non-live football platform.

Lineker’s Goalhanger, co-founded in 2014, outperforms Neville’s venture in podcast metrics. Buzz16 generated £11.6m in revenue last year, trailing the £14m Goalhanger earned from a Netflix deal to air The Rest Is Football daily during the World Cup. Goalhanger has 250,000 paying members, 75 million monthly downloads, and dominates Spotify’s global top 40 podcast charts across politics, history and sport.

Leaders of both networks reject the rivalry label, citing distinct business models. The Overlap runs video-first, while Goalhanger prioritizes podcasts, with the latter now pivoting to video. Jimmy Worrall notes both firms are nimble, with access to capital, but lack premium live content rights. Former BBC executive Roger Mosey adds mainstream broadcasters face impartiality rules limiting editorial flexibility compared to independent podcasts.
