Matt Bloomfield leaves Oxford United after relegation

Oxford United have confirmed the departure of head coach Matt Bloomfield, ending a six‑month spell that began when the club languished 23rd in the Championship. Bloomfield arrived after a disastrous run under Mark Rowett, who managed only one win in ten games. The former Luton manager took over with the team three points adrift of safety. The club confirmed the move on its official website.

Bloomfield, who cut his teeth at Colchester United and later guided Wycombe Wanderers to League One promotion, inherited a side that briefly sparked hope in late February with three successive victories, lifting Oxford to 21st. Those three wins sparked brief optimism among supporters. Yet a poor run of two wins from the next eight matches sealed their fate, and relegation was confirmed in April.

Speaking after the drop, Bloomfield said he was proud of the incremental improvements but accepted that staying up was the ultimate goal. He added he had not dwelt on his own job security, focusing instead on delivering his best. Oxford now face a return to League One after a two‑year Championship stint. Financial constraints mean Oxford must rebuild with a limited transfer budget.
