Man City beat Arsenal for Monga signing

Manchester City have agreed a £12.5m deal to sign 17-year-old Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, gazumping Arsenal who were leading the race for the England youth international. The fee matches what Arsenal paid for Theo Walcott in 2006 and comes as Monga's scholarship converts to a professional contract on his 17th birthday Friday. New City boss Enzo Maresca, who coached Monga during his Leicester spell, accelerated the move. Brentford also held interest but Leicester accepted City's offer following their relegation to League One.

Monga became Leicester's youngest starter at 16 years and 34 days in a Carabao Cup tie last August and made 37 total appearances, including seven Premier League substitute outings. His top-flight debut came in April 2025 against Newcastle, playing 16 minutes in a 3-0 loss at St James' Park. He currently ranks as the third-youngest Premier League player behind Arsenal duo Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri. A left-winger comfortable on both flanks with two-footed ability, Monga said of his debut: "At first I was obviously nervous but when I got onto the pitch all the nerves went away."

CP Coaching Academy's Callum Powell, who worked with Monga from age 11, highlights his "ability to manipulate the ball and his dribbling" plus rare high-speed footwork shifts. Powell compares Monga's pressure-proof mentality to Ivan Toney: "He is not fazed, he doesn't feel the pressure, in fact he is motivated by the pressure." City may include Monga on their pre-season tour to Hong Kong and Seoul alongside fellow youngsters Vitor Reis, Sverre Nypan and Divine Mukasa.

With City's forward line stacked with established internationals, immediate first-team minutes look unlikely. However, Maresca's familiarity and the club's track record integrating academy talent suggest a structured pathway. For Arsenal, missing out on a player they nearly secured raises questions about their youth recruitment strategy against their title rivals.
