Leicester Appeals Six-Point EFL Deduction

Leicester City have lodged an appeal against a six-point deduction imposed by an independent commission for breaching English Football League financial rules. The sanction, handed down earlier this month, dropped the Foxes to 20th in the Championship table, just outside the relegation zone on goal difference. Two consecutive defeats since have pushed them into the bottom three, two points from safety.

Leicester was charged by the Premier League in May for violating profit and sustainability rules (PSR) over the three years ending 2023-24. The club's accounts showed losses of £19.4m for the period ending June 2024, with previous seasons recording losses of £89.7m and £92.5m. The Premier League stated they will seek an urgent resolution before the season ends, which will also address their own appeal regarding late submission of annual accounts.

When the deduction was announced, Leicester called it "disproportionate," arguing the commission failed to adequately consider mitigating factors. The club had contended their case should be evaluated over 36 months rather than 37, caused by delayed accounts submission. The commission ruled on the 36-month period, finding Leicester's overspend at £20.8m above the £83m limit. While a maximum 12-point penalty was possible, the committee settled on six points, citing the club's "improving financial position" during the assessment period.
