Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement at age 39, ending a career that included winning the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016. The Celtic goalkeeper informed TV2 that his contract expires in June and he will stop playing then. Medical consultations determined his shoulder injury would require surgery keeping him out for a year, with surgeons advising he should not expect to return to top-level football.

Schmeichel captained Leicester to FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs in 2021, the same year he earned his second Leicester Player of the Season award. He earned 120 caps for Denmark, featuring at two World Cups and two European Championships. The Danish Football Player of the Year won three times, also claimed two Scottish league titles with Celtic and last season's Scottish Cup.

The son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel came through Manchester City's youth system before loan spells at Darlington, Bury, Falkirk, Cardiff and Coventry. He later played for Notts County and Leeds before his eight-year spell at Leicester transformed him into one of the Premier League's most respected goalkeepers. His retirement closes the chapter on a career that defied 5,000-1 odds to deliver Leicester's greatest ever achievement.
