Kipp Popert, the 15‑time G4D Tour champion and world No.1 among disabled golfers, made his DP World Tour debut at the Austrian Alpine Open in Kitzbühel. The Englishman, who battles cerebral palsy, entered the field after the G4D Tour was suspended in April. His appearance marks the first time the tour’s top disabled player has competed in a mainstream event.

Popert opened with a five‑over‑par 75, carding two birdies, two bogeys and a double‑bogey before finishing with a birdie‑bogey stretch. He showcased a long‑range right‑to‑left putt on the 12th and repeated the feat on the 16th, drawing praise from spectators. Yanhan Zhou led after round one with an eight‑under 62, while locals Sepp Straka, James Morrison and Brandon Robinson‑Thompson rounded out a strong field.

The suspension of the G4D Tour left Popert without his primary circuit, prompting the DP World Tour to pledge two flagship events: the annual G4D Open in partnership with the R&A and a G4D match slated for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Organisers said these platforms will sustain momentum and could eventually support golf’s Paralympic ambitions.

Earlier in May, Popert hosted the Kipp Popert World Invitational at London Golf Club, paying each of the eight top disabled competitors £3,000 to compete. He argued that prize money, while modest, keeps elite disabled athletes in the sport and raises visibility for younger players. Popert’s Alpine Open showing proves he can contend alongside the world’s best, reinforcing his status as a trailblazer.
