Eighteen‑year‑old Jesse Derry made his Premier League debut for Chelsea on Monday, starting against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge in front of a packed crowd. The forward collided heads with Forest midfielder Zach Abbott just before half‑time, prompting medical staff to administer oxygen on the pitch. After a prolonged stoppage he was stretchered off and taken to St Mary’s Hospital for precautionary checks.

Chelsea confirmed Derry arrived at the hospital conscious and talking, and he has since been released with ongoing monitoring. The club thanked the medical team, St Mary’s staff, teammates and supporters for their swift response for the Blues. Because Premier League rules allow one concussion substitute per match, Liam Delap entered the game in Derry’s place, preserving the usual substitution quota.

The incident arrived as Derry, son of former Leeds and Crystal Palace midfielder Shaun Derry, sought to build on two FA Cup substitute appearances. While Forest’s Morgan Gibbs‑White also suffered a collision with goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, the English side said the midfielder was not withdrawn for concussion. Derry’s brief debut underscores the club’s growing reliance on youth amid a demanding season for the next fixtures.
