Mark Hughes has announced the death of his son Alex, aged 38, describing himself as "totally heartbroken" by the sudden and unexpected loss. The former Wales manager and ex-Premier League striker paid tribute to his son through the League Managers Association, highlighting Alex's contributions to football.

Alex followed his father into the sport, playing for Stockport County and Wrexham before transitioning to player analysis and recruitment roles. He worked at Blackburn, Manchester City and Fulham during his father's managerial tenures, gaining experience across multiple clubs. Later, Alex led a private academy in Portugal before becoming a player agent.

In recent years, Alex contributed to non-league sides AFC Fylded and Morecambe, eventually taking the player recruitment lead role at League Two club Grimsby Town in July 2023. His career spanned playing, coaching, and administrative positions within English football.

Hughes described Alex as a devoted husband and father to Jessica, Sebastian and Leonardo. The football community has expressed condolences for the Hughes family during this difficult time. Alex leaves behind his wife, two children, parents and siblings Curtis and Xenna.
