Anton Ferdinand has landed his first senior coaching role at newly promoted Hornchurch, reuniting with childhood friend and former West Ham teammate Daryl McMahon. The 41-year-old former defender joins as first-team coach, marking a significant step for the National League newcomers.

Hornchurch have moved quickly this summer, pairing Ferdinand's arrival with the appointment of Robert Lee as director of football. The Urchins earned promotion last season and now boast a backroom staff with Premier League pedigree — Ferdinand spent 16 years in the top flight with West Ham, Sunderland, QPR and Reading, plus 17 England Under-21 caps.

Ferdinand called the move humbling and emphasized learning from McMahon while contributing his playing experience. McMahon praised his former teammate's enthusiasm and knowledge. The partnership dates back to their academy days at age 11. For a club stepping up to the fifth tier, this blend of familiarity and professional pedigree could prove decisive.

The coaching transition completes a remarkable summer for Hornchurch, who have leveraged personal connections to attract established names. Ferdinand steps off the punditry circuit into daily training ground demands — a test of whether his sharp television analysis translates to player development at this level.
