Ex‑players demand justice over lost millions

Sir Keir Starmer has asked the Chief Secretary to the Treasury to meet a group of retired footballers who say they were victims of financial abuse. Danny Murphy, Brian Deane and Rod Wallace belong to the V11 campaign, a collective of eleven former players who invested with Kingsbridge Asset Management in the 1990s and 2000s.

BBC Sport revealed in September that the players lost tens of millions of pounds, with some now owing millions more in tax. Labour MP Jo White compared the case to the Post Office scandal, arguing that working‑class footballers were mis‑sold and still face tax on money they never realised.

David McKee and Kevin McMenamin, former Kingsbridge executives, have denied wrongdoing. Last year they told the BBC that Kingsbridge advised in good faith and set out the risks and opportunities both before and after any investment was agreed.

Prime Minister’s Questions saw Labour highlight the injustice, prompting the Prime Minister to promise a meeting that will determine what further steps the government can take to support those affected. The case underscores the need for tighter oversight of footballers’ post‑career investments.
