England's World Cup 2026 yellow card risks

Four England stars, including Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guéhi, and Michael Olise, are walking a disciplinary tightrope heading into the knockout stages of the World Cup 2026. Players accumulating two yellow cards across the Round of 32, Round of 16, and quarter-finals will face an automatic one-match ban.

This means any player cautioned in both the Round of 32 and Round of 16 would miss their team's quarter-final tie. Similarly, bookings in either of those rounds combined with a yellow card in the quarter-finals would rule a player out of the semi-final. Bellingham, Rice, Guéhi, and Olise have all received yellow cards in previous matches.

Yellow cards are reset after the quarter-finals, meaning only a suspension in the semi-final would result in a player missing the final. Straight red cards or two yellow cards in one match result in a one-match suspension, with FIFA reserving the right to impose further sanctions. This disciplinary situation could significantly impact England's potential progression through the tournament.
