England's World Cup squad faces mounting pressure to address political issues ahead of the 2026 tournament in North America, with players expressing concern about being thrust into political spokesperson roles. The Professional Footballers' Association's Maheta Molango revealed that England players have sought guidance on handling calls from rights campaigners and media organizations to speak out on contentious issues.

Molango highlighted the difficult position players found themselves in during the Qatar World Cup, where they were expected to comment on LGBT rights in a country where homosexuality can be punishable by death. Players feel they're being asked to fill leadership voids that should be occupied by governments and governing bodies. The controversy comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the United States' immigration policies and Mexico's cartel violence concerns.

Players maintain they want to use their platforms thoughtfully but insist on doing so on their own terms. Molango emphasized that footballers are paid to deliver on-field performances, not serve as political representatives. He called for football to remain separate from politics, arguing that the sport should cater to everyone without appearing to side with any particular position. The PFA chief stressed that players should have a voice in FIFA decisions but shouldn't be cherry-picked for political statements when convenient.
