Republic of Ireland international Emily Murphy is on the verge of joining Women’s Super League club Brighton. The 23‑year‑old was Newcastle’s top‑scorer last season, netting 6 goals and providing four assists in 15 starts, and has a year left on her contract. Newcastle expects a club‑record fee once the deal is completed. Murphy has prior WSL experience with Birmingham City and Chelsea and spells in the United States, and has become a regular for the Republic of Ireland, starting five of their six Women’s World Cup qualifying matches in 2024. Brighton have already made five signings this summer as they look to build on last season’s success, where they reached the Women’s FA Cup final. Newcastle confirmed a replacement for Murphy on Tuesday with the signing of Scotland international Kathleen McGovern, their fourth acquisition this summer. McGovern joins from Scottish side Hibernian, where she netted 51 goals in 65 appearances.

Brighton's summer recruitment also includes experienced midfielders and defenders, aiming to strengthen squad depth ahead of next season’s European competition. Newcastle’s new signing McGovern brings experience from Hibernian’s successful campaign, adding firepower to their attacking options. The transfer reflects the growing trend of WSL clubs investing heavily in proven international talent.
