Dembele Defends Mbappe Amid World Cup 2026 Criticism

France forward Ousmane Dembele has launched a passionate defense of Kylian Mbappe, claiming critics have crossed the line with their treatment of the Real Madrid striker. Dembele told Marca that the criticism is unfair and excessive, pointing out that Mbappe remains human despite his fame and status as France captain since 2023.

The scrutiny intensified after Mbappe's summer move from Paris St-Germain to Real Madrid failed to yield silverware this season. Dembele, who helped PSG secure consecutive Champions League titles, understands the pressure facing his teammate. Both players are expected to feature in France's World Cup opener against Senegal on Tuesday, with matches against Iraq and Norway completing their group stage.

Dembele also praised outgoing coach Didier Deschamps, calling him an exceptional leader who will forever remain a legend. Deschamps guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and another final in 2022, where Mbappe scored a hat-trick. Dembele started that final and netted in the 2018 victory over Croatia.

On the potential succession, Dembele welcomed reports linking Zinedine Zidane with the France job. He believes the 1998 World Cup winner would excel as Deschamps' replacement, though the 53-year-old has declined to discuss the position while the current coach remains in charge.
