Chelsea have agreed a record £117m deal with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers, hijacking Arsenal's pursuit of the forward. The 23-year-old is set to sign a six-year contract with an option for a further year and will undergo a medical on Monday after returning from England's World Cup campaign. Rogers becomes the most expensive British player, surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, and also overtakes Moises Caicedo's £115m as Chelsea's record signing.

Rogers scored 14 goals with 11 assists in 55 appearances for Villa last season, earning Europa League Player of the Year honours as the club won the competition. Since joining from Middlesbrough for £16m in 2024, he has won 21 England caps and featured at the 2026 World Cup.

Middlesbrough stand to receive £20.3m from a 20% sell-on clause, bringing their total return on Rogers to £35.8m after initially signing him from Manchester City for £1.1m in 2023. Rogers becomes the seventh former City youth player to join Chelsea since the new ownership, a strategy driven by co-director of recruitment Joe Shields.

Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol calls the move a "real statement of intent" by Chelsea under new manager Xabi Alonso, while Lewis Jones describes Villa's summer as a "nightmare" after losing Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, and now their standout performer Rogers.
