Antonio Eyes Charlton Return After Career-Threatening Crash

Former West Ham striker Michail Antonio has held initial talks with Charlton Athletic about a potential return to English football. The 35-year-old forward, who scored 83 goals in 323 appearances during his decade at West Ham, has been out of competitive action since a near-fatal car crash in December 2024 that left him with multiple leg fractures.

Antonio recovered sufficiently to play for Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup last June but was released by West Ham before this season. He had previously explored moves to Brentford and Leicester without success. BBC Sport understands that discussions with Charlton are at an exploratory stage, with Addicks boss Nathan Jones believing Antonio could bring value to his squad until season's end.

In an exclusive March 2025 interview, Antonio revealed he felt 'close to dying' after shattering his femur in four places. Despite initial medical advice to avoid weight-bearing for three months, he began walking sooner under specialist guidance. The veteran forward believes he's been given 'another chance at life' and could provide Championship experience to Charlton's promotion push.
