Austria have cleared captain David Alaba to travel to the United States after his muscle strain in the 1‑0 friendly win over Tunisia. Alaba, a former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid defender, was subbed at halftime but medical tests confirmed he is fit for the World Cup squad. His decades of top‑flight experience provides vital leadership for a young side.

Midfielder Christoph Baumgartner, however, will miss the tournament. The 26‑year‑old suffered a thigh muscle pull during Monday’s pre‑match warm‑up and the Austrian FA confirmed his withdrawal on Tuesday. Baumgartner finished the season with 17 goals and nine assists for RB Leipzig, making him one of Austria’s most influential players. His versatility helped Leipzig press high and clinch a Champions League spot.

Coach Ralf Rangnick called the loss “very bitter” and pledged full support for Baumgartner’s recovery. Austria open the group stage against Jordan on 16 June, then face Argentina and Algeria. With Alaba back but Baumgartner absent, the team will rely on depth in midfield to stay competitive. Alaba will likely anchor the back line and take set‑piece duties, while Rangnick may shift to a more defensive midfield shape.
